Human-Centered Approach

What is a human-centered approach?

A human-centered approach is a mindset that puts people—individually and collectively—at the heart of understanding, learning, and change. It goes beyond single issues to consider the whole person and their environment, recognizing that needs are shaped by interconnected systems and relationships.

People are not passive recipients but active partners, with their experiences, ideas, and priorities shaping both the process and the outcome. This approach values empowerment, context, and iteration—designing solutions that are adaptable and rooted in real life. It’s about listening deeply, focusing on what truly matters, and creating change that honors the people it’s meant to serve.

Flourishing Spark infuses human-centered approaches in all activities.

  • People and their lived experiences are always at the core. Engage with respect to make sure that planned actions reflect the true needs and wants of the people they are designed to serve.

  • Make sure you are solving the right problem. (Ask why again...and again...)

  • Consider the complex interconnections within systems before taking action.

  • To find creative and effective solutions, don't be too quick to dismiss ideas outside the norm, as there is a fine line between the absurd and the truly innovative.

  • Playfulness helps your brain think of new ideas and find novel connections between concepts. Don't get too attached to any one idea—test ideas, gather feedback, learn, and adjust.
